Dubai Metro & Public Transport: A Newcomer's Guide

Updated 17 August 2026

Dubai has a clean, modern public transport network that is easy to use once you have a Nol card. For many residents it is the cheapest and least stressful way to get around, especially along the metro corridors.

The Nol card

A Nol card is the rechargeable smart card that pays for the metro, tram, buses and water buses. There are different card types for occasional and regular users. Tap in when you start your journey and tap out when you finish so the correct fare is charged by zone.

Metro and tram

The metro is fast, air-conditioned and driverless, connecting many major districts, malls and the airport. The tram links parts of the Marina and JBR area and connects with the metro. Trains have a designated Gold Class and a women-and-children cabin.

Buses and last-mile options

An extensive bus network fills the gaps the metro does not reach, and feeder buses connect stations to residential areas. For the last mile, taxis and ride-hailing apps are widely available.

Frequently asked questions

Is public transport cheaper than a car?

For commuting along metro routes, usually yes — you avoid fuel, tolls, parking and insurance. A car wins on flexibility for trips off the network.
