How to Open a Bank Account in the UAE
Updated 17 August 2026
Opening a bank account is one of the first things most new residents do. The process is straightforward once your residence visa and Emirates ID are in progress. Here is what banks typically ask for and how to choose the right account.
Resident vs non-resident accounts
Residents with a valid visa can open a full current account with a debit card, cheque book and online banking. Non-residents can sometimes open a limited savings account, but options are narrower and minimum balances are usually higher.
Documents you usually need
Banks commonly ask for your passport with the residence visa, your Emirates ID (or the application if it is still being processed), and a salary certificate or employment letter. Some banks also request proof of address such as a tenancy contract or a utility bill.
Minimum balance and salary transfer
Many accounts require a minimum monthly balance, below which a fee may apply. "Salary transfer" accounts, where your employer pays your salary into the account, often waive the minimum balance and unlock better rates or card offers.
Choosing a bank
Compare monthly fees, the minimum balance, ATM and branch coverage near you, the quality of the mobile app, and any perks such as cashback or fee-free international transfers. If you send money home regularly, check the bank's remittance rates and partner exchange houses.
Frequently asked questions
Can I open an account before my visa is ready?
Usually you need at least the residence visa in progress and an Emirates ID application. Some banks open the account and activate full features once the ID is issued.
How long does it take?
Often a few working days once documents are submitted, though timelines vary by bank and how quickly your Emirates ID is issued.
