Moving to Dubai: A First-Month Checklist
Updated 17 August 2026
Relocating to Dubai involves a predictable sequence of tasks. Tackling them in the right order avoids delays, because several steps depend on your residence visa and Emirates ID being in place first. Use this checklist to stay organised in your first month.
Before you fly
Get your job offer and entry permit sorted, gather attested documents (degree, marriage and birth certificates if you plan to sponsor family), and bring several passport photos. Arrange short-term accommodation for your first few weeks so you are not rushed into a lease.
Residence visa and Emirates ID
Once you arrive, your employer usually initiates the residence visa: a medical fitness test, biometrics and the Emirates ID application. Almost everything else — a bank account, a postpaid SIM, a tenancy contract — becomes easier once the Emirates ID is issued, so prioritise it.
Home, bank and connectivity
With your visa in progress you can open a bank account, get a local SIM, and start viewing apartments. When you sign a lease, register the tenancy (Ejari in Dubai) and set up your electricity and water (DEWA) and internet.
Getting around
Buy a Nol card for the metro and buses, or begin the process of converting your driving licence if you plan to drive. Download the main government and transport apps to handle services from your phone.
Frequently asked questions
What should I do first?
